3D STUDIO

Main Content

Training

The 3D printing studio is a new facility hosted in the Physics Building. The facility is open to staff and students in the Faculty of Science who are interested in learning 3D printing techniques or have academic related printing needs. New users are required to undergo training with one of our team of advanced users up to a basic level.

New users are encouraged to contact our trainers for training.

Completion of basic training will allow you to access a key that may be signed out from the main Physics and Astronomy Office during regular office hours 8:00am - 4:30pm during weekdays. Following basic training, very active users may receive additional training to become part of the team of advanced users who have greater freedom and access to the facility.

Printers

The studio currently hosts three Prusa Mk3 printers and one Machina Mk2 X20. The printers are capable of printing a variety of materials which will increase in range as upgrades are implemented.

Materials

The primary material used to print objects is PLA (polyactic acid) and polycarbonate filament (used for imaging phantoms used in medical physics experiments). Exploratory work for the Ultrafast Microscopy and Magnetism Research Group has introduced high density polyethelene (HDPE) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Testing of additional materials which will expand research applications are planned for the near future.

Design

The 3D print studio offers access to a design computer with Autodesk inventor as well as additional software to bring your design to the printer. This powerful CAD 3D design software is the gateway into the 3D studio.

COST

Introductory rates are currently under discussion and are anticipated to be low. At present, training and research related jobs are free.
